Iron Maiden is a British heavy metal band formed in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris, a former member of the bands Gypsy's Kiss and Smiler. The name "Iron Maiden", the homonym of a medieval torture instrument that appears in the film The Man in the Iron Mask, based on the work of the French novelist Alexandre Dumas.
Pioneers of the musical movement known as NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal), the band achieved substantial success in the early 1980s, accompanied by a growing fan base. But it was with 1982's The Number of the Beast that Iron Maiden reached international fame, producing a string of multi-platinum albums that became classics of the genre. His work has influenced several rock and metal bands, from the oldest to the most modern, and are considered one of the most important and influential groups of the style.
With four decades of existence, sixteen studio albums, six live albums, fourteen videos and several CDs, the band came to be one of the most successful in heavy metal history, having sold about 100 million albums worldwide, crowned with several gold and platinum certificates. In 2002, the band received the Ivor Novello Award in recognition of international success as one of the best composing partnerships in England. During the American tour of 2005, was added to the Walk of Fame of Hollywood Rock. In 2011, they won a Grammy in the category Best Performance of Metal with the song "El Dorado". It was also voted best live band of 2009 by the Brit Awards.
